Ha! Pandemic or cover-up? 'Highly infectious but obscure disease with confusing symptoms'? Sounds like Zombie outbreak ago-go to me. Going to start stockpiling to be on the safe side, I recommend you start putting some stuff to one side. That said I am still screwed by being so idented in such a large population centre. At least I don't live in New York, I saw firsthand why so many Zombie movies focus on built up areas like it - So cramped and so many people. Amazing place outside of Apocalyptic paranoia, had an awesome holiday.
